Small businesses rarely need every feature in an enterprise SEO suite. They need to find keywords worth targeting, understand why competitors rank, fix technical problems and track progress without paying for capacity they will not use.

This guide compares five SEO platforms that are common choices for small businesses and agencies. We use vendor pricing pages and product pages as of October 10, 2026, and we flag anything we could not confirm.

Quick comparison

Tool Best for Paid pricing (Oct 2026) Free option
Semrush All-in-one SEO plus AI visibility SEO $139/mo, or $117.33/mo billed annually Free plan (1 demo project); 7-day trial
Ahrefs Backlink and competitor research Starter $29/mo; Lite $129/mo Ahrefs Free for verified sites; no trial

Ubersuggest Budget-conscious owners Three tiers between $29 and $99 7-day trial on monthly plans

How we selected these tools

  • Core SEO coverage: keyword research, rank tracking, site audits and competitor or backlink data.
  • Published pricing: clear plan limits on an official page.
  • Small-business fit: plans accessible to one to a few users.
  • AI search visibility: an increasingly common feature we note where vendors document it.

We did not include Moz Pro because we could not verify its current plans from official pages when preparing this guide.

The 5 tools

1. Semrush: broad platform

Semrush lists an SEO plan at $139 a month ($117.33 a month billed annually) with 5 websites and 500 keywords a day. Starter at $199 a month adds AI search tracking with 50 AI prompts a day. Pro+ is $299 and Advanced is $549 a month. A free plan with one demo project and a 7-day trial are available.

  • Strengths: wide toolset, AI visibility reporting in higher plans, free entry point.
  • Limitations: entry price is higher than several rivals; extra users start at $45 a month.

2. Ahrefs: research depth

Ahrefs lists Starter at $29 a month, Lite at $129 with 5 projects and 750 tracked keywords, Standard at $249 and Advanced at $449. It has no trial and says it does not run discounts. Ahrefs Free gives site owners Site Audit and limited Site Explorer data for verified sites.

  • Strengths: strong research tooling, a free tier for your own site, low-priced Starter.
  • Limitations: no trial; add-ons such as Brand Radar for AI visibility start at $199 a month.

3. SE Ranking: team-friendly pricing

SE Ranking lists Core at $129 a month for 10 projects, 2,000 keywords tracked daily and 250,000 pages audited. Growth is $279. A 14-day trial needs no card. Agency Pack adds white-label reporting.

  • Strengths: clear project and keyword limits; agency features available.
  • Limitations: AI search tracking beyond included limits is an add-on.

4. Mangools: simple toolset

Mangools bundles KWFinder for keywords, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher for rank tracking, LinkMiner for backlinks and SiteProfiler. A free account is available without a card. We could not confirm plan prices from the pages we checked, and a dedicated site-audit tool is not listed.

  • Strengths: focused tools and a free account.
  • Limitations: no site-audit tool listed; confirm pricing on the vendor site.

5. Ubersuggest: budget option

Ubersuggest offers three tiers priced between $29 and $99, with a one-time lifetime option. The lowest tier lists 1 project, 150 reports a day and 125 rank-tracked keywords per project. A 7-day trial applies to monthly plans.

  • Strengths: low entry cost and keyword, audit and rank-tracking tools in one place.
  • Limitations: the vendor’s claims of being cheaper than competitors are its own; tiers are small.

Pricing and limitations

  • Billing basis: Semrush and SE Ranking show lower annual rates. Ahrefs lists monthly prices.
  • Caps: projects, tracked keywords and audit pages are the limits that matter most for small sites.
  • Data differences: each vendor publishes its own database figures. We have not independently compared them.

Best choice by use case

  • Own one site and want free data: Ahrefs Free or Semrush’s free plan.
  • Competitor and backlink research: Ahrefs.
  • Broad toolset and AI search visibility: Semrush.
  • Agency or multi-client reporting: SE Ranking.
  • Tight budget: Ubersuggest, or Mangools after you confirm prices.

How to choose

  1. Decide the three tasks you will do weekly.
  2. Match them to plan limits for sites and tracked keywords.
  3. Use a trial or free plan on your own site.
  4. Consider an alternative if cost is the sticking point; see our Semrush alternatives guide.

FAQs

Do I need a paid SEO tool?

Not at the very start. Google Search Console is free, and several vendors offer free tiers. Upgrade when you need competitor and keyword data at scale.

How long does SEO take to work?

It depends on competition, site authority and content quality. No tool can guarantee a timeline.

Conclusion

Start with the free tier on your own site, then pay for the platform whose limits match your workload. Semrush suits broad needs, Ahrefs suits research depth, SE Ranking suits teams, and Mangools or Ubersuggest suit tighter budgets.
